Tunable and Sensitive Detection of Cortisol Using Anisotropic Phosphorene with a Surface Plasmon Resonance Technique: Numerical Investigation

Tunable and ultrasensitive surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors are highly desirable for monitoring stress hormones such as cortisol, a steroid hormone formed in the human body’s adrenal glands. This paper describes detection of cortisol using bimetallic SPR sensor based on anisotropic two-dimensional material, i.e., phosphorene. Thicknesses bi-metal layers, copper (Cu) nickel (Ni), optimized to achieve strong excitation. The proposed is rotated in-plane with rotation angle (φ) around z-axis obtain phosphorene behavior. performance parameters demonstrated terms higher sensitivity (347.78 °/RIU), maximum angular figure merit (FOM* = 1780.3), finer limit (0.026 ng/mL). Furthermore, significant penetration depth (203 nm) achieved sensor. obtained results above indicate that outperforms previously reported papers literature technique.
